Edie Reaney Chunn Literature Poetry

Encountering a Vertical Limit

Let us begin with
an introduction to rock:
a tap will tell you
if it’s full or hollow.
And enter: and let yourself
lay open, stiller than
a spinning top.
Time attaches us to luminous things—
…………….clamber, climbing, finding
…………….you always want
to look back. (You usually do
look back.) And find
you will not leave it behind—
but a wound is a wound:
lovewound, lightwound, timewound.
A tap will tell you
if it’s empty or filled:
you’ll land uprightly or similar,
stiller than a pillar of salt.
